The saga of the selection of coach for the senior Indian cricket team came to an end a few days back when Ravi Shastri was appointed by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC). But when it seemed that everything was going to settle down quickly, things took a drastic turn as Shastri let BCCI know that he wants Bharat Arun as the bowling coach of India instead of Zaheer Khan who has been previously appointed for that role by CAC.
Now according to the latest updates, he wants to have Sachin Tendulkar as the batting consultant of the team for a very short period of time. Now, that will definitely see Rahul Dravid getting ripped off his responsibilities of being the batting consultant of the Indian team in overseas tournaments, which BCCI has given him. (Incidentally, Rahul Dravid has been re-appointed as the coach of the under-19 Indian cricket team as well as the India A team).
However, it remains to be a subject for further revelation whether BCCI fulfills Shastri’s wishes. This is because it will bring into question the case of conflict of interest. Sachin Tendulkar has a number of other professional commitments including his role in the Mumbai Indians team in the Indian Premier League. So that might come as a huge hindrance for Tendulkar’s appointment. Also, the fact that even if he gets the responsibility, he will get it for a few days and it would be really dicey for him to give up all other commitments which are more long lasting.
So it will be really intriguing to find out where things are heading. Also, the chances of Tendulkar being appointed as the batting consultant for the overseas tournaments can’t be wiped out because he shares a good rapport with Shastri (Also, it can’t be ignored that the players in the national side will be able to get assistance from their idol). It is a well-known fact, that Sachin Tendulkar, being an integral part of the CAC, played an instrumental role in the selection of the former Indian captain as the coach of the team. So it is a possibility that Shastri is making an attempt to pay him back the trust he has shown in him.
