Polish video game developers CI Games have had a disappointing year so far, mostly related to the highly anticipated release of Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3. The game had been delayed numerous times since its announcement back in 2014, but its release in April this year was not met with kind reactions from most corners. And that has taken a toll on another much-awaited title from the studio- the sequel to 2014’s well-received RPG, Lords of the Fallen.
Like SGW3, it appears that the developers announced Lords of the Fallen 2 a lot earlier than they could afford to. While the new game was supposed to be scheduled for release sometime in 2017, that is no longer a possibility. In an interview with Eurogamer, Marek Tymiński has touched upon the studio’s plans for the sequel’s release in the wake of Tomasz Gop’s departure.
It is no secret that CI Games has taken a big hit with Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3. The need to focus on such a large scale title was one of the driving factors behind work on Lords of the Fallen 2 being slowed down significantly. But Tymiński has told the publication that the studio has learned from its mistakes and will not focus on chasing triple-A production scales to match other releases. “What we said about departing from triple-A: it means that we can really focus on the quality of our products, not thinking we have to match the scale of the major releases.”
That, according to the CI Games CEO, will apply to how they will approach Lords of the Fallen 2 as well. But although this means that the game is still happening, the “quality way” they are adopting this time leads to a significant delay in its release.
The decision to take a different approach, Tymiński says, is based on the changing trends of the industry. “You have games that are called triple-A but in fact they’re not triple-A by today’s standards – maybe they were by three year’s ago standards – and they are suffering by not really selling as many units as anyone projected.”
The good news is that the team definitely does not lack the ambition to make a great game. So although there currently is a comparatively smaller team working on Lords of the Fallen 2, they are now aware that the focus should be on the product, and not on the budget. “We’ve been working quite a lot on Lords of the Fallen 2, we really did a lot. It’s really finding the best teams who can work on that game together, and when we have that setting, we pretty much know what we want to do,” he said.
The question that naturally arises is when the game is expected to launch. Tymiński affirmed that it may arrive within the next two years, adding that the studio will have a new game in 2018 without naming the project.
